Our Strategic Planning Process

Dear Community Members,

I am pleased to share with you that after nine months of listening, learning and collecting input from a diverse group that represents the larger community of ERUSD, we have the formal draft of the 2018-2023 ERUSD Strategic Plan. I would like to share with you some of the highlights of our process:

From September until December of 2017, we held Community Forums at different school sites. The Community Forums were structured in such a way that allowed participants to discuss and engage in a constructive dialogue about the areas to be addressed in the plan. The design of these Forums followed a research-based approach to ensure all participants had the opportunity to hear and learn from each other's perspective. From January until March of 2018, we held individual meetings to gather the perspective of community partners. During this time, we also gathered the perspective of school and central office administrators.

Opening by this time provides ample time for students to eat a nutritious breakfast and play with their classmates in a safe and supervised environment. This also provides extra time for parents to get to work on time. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school or the district office at 562.801.7300.

Rio Vista Elementary Update

Yesterday afternoon, district staff were performing routine maintenance work with a tractor on the grounds of Rio Vista Elementary School. In the course of this work, it appears the tractor’s throttle malfunctioned, causing the tractor’s bucket to go through a classroom’s bay window. We were notified almost immediately thereafter at 1:15 p.m. Although students were in the affected classroom, none were injured and all were removed from the classroom. The safety of our students is our absolute first priority, and we have taken steps to ensure that.

Public Statement Regarding Teacher Discipline

Last month the El Rancho Unified School District was swamped with controversy as the result of bullying and anti-military service statements made in class by an El Rancho High School teacher that went viral on the internet.

As you know, that teacher was placed on administrative leave while the District conducted an investigation. At subsequent meetings of the Board of Trustees, we promised that we would keep the public informed of developments, subject to the legal obligations of the District. These developments are:

1. The investigation, conducted by a third-party investigator has been completed.
2. The Superintendent has recommended disciplinary action including termination of employment based on the investigation report and supporting documents.
3. The Board of Trustees has voted to take action as recommended by the Superintendent.
4. The teacher will remain on unpaid leave pending any appeals to the State Office of Administrative Hearings.
5. Please direct any questions you may have to the Office of the Superintendent and we will post answers as appropriate on the District’s website.
