Students Receive Perfect Score on STAR Exam

El Rancho Unified School District is elated to share the 2012 academic achievement STAR test results of Rivera Elementary.  Not only does the school boast an Academic Performance Index of 848 reflecting 26 points growth this past school year, the results also demonstrate a rise in perfect scores of 600.  Eighteen students received a perfect score in mathematics, and one student achieved a perfect score in the area of language arts.  Rivera Elementary has a long history of strong academic performance.  It is evident around campus that high expectations are held for all - students, staff, and parents.  The school community has a strong sense of commitment, perseverance, and pride.  Best practices include consistent collaboration, ongoing data analysis, instructional focus on standards mastery, and constant discussion of student progress with students and their families.
El Rancho Unified’s district-wide data further reveals an additional 25 students in grades 3-10 receiving perfect scores of 600 in mathematics.  A signature practice benefitting this success has been implementation of cognitive math instruction.  Training was provided to teachers through the Project ALPHA program which ERUSD received a California School Boards Association Golden Bell award in 2007.  Project ALPHA (Algebra Preparedness for Higher  Achievement) aims to raise math achievement among underrepresented students in an effort to prepare them for high school, the California High School Exit Exam, and upper-level math coursework.  Clearly, this goal has successfully been achieved as El Rancho students demonstrate an absolute strength in the area of mathematics, and hope for much more success in its future.
