Overview of TAH3

The Teaching American History Grant, awarded to the El Rancho Unified School District, was implemented in 2010 and will continue through 2015. The ERUSD works closely with Pasadena Unified in implementing the grant.

Mrs. Susanna Smith, former Assistant Superintendent of Education Services, was instrumental in bringing the TAH 3 Grant to the ERUSD. Her support is invaluable to the successful implementation of the grant.


This grant enables the El Rancho Unified School to work with The Huntington Library and the USC Institute on California and the West. Dr. Bill Deverell, ICW and a USC professor, will serve as the lead historian bringing historical content to the TAH teachers. The Huntington Library supports TAH teachers by providing both the facilities for the seminars and historical resources. Working alongside Dr. Deverell is, local historian, Michele Zack. She will provide information related to our local history.


Linda Ramirez, Project Coordinator for the El Rancho Unified School District, works closely with Dr. Deverell and Jack Barielles. Jack Barielles has been selected to serve as the grant evaluator. Helen Chan- Hill, Coordinator of Professional Development for the Pasadena Unified School District, has been assisting with staff development.


Lilia Carreon, the ERUSD History Coach, will work with TAH 3 teachers. Her responsibility is to assist the teachers with content related teaching methods in order to improve academic achievement.


TAH teachers will attend scholar sessions at the Huntington Library. Renowned scholars such as Dr. Steven Aron, Dr. Peter Mancall, Dr. Bill Deverell, and Dr. Daniel Walker Howe will present seminars, on various topics, in American History. Topics such as Colonial Exploration, Slavery in the World, The Early Republic, and the coming Crisis of Civil War will be presented to our Teaching American History Teachers.


Twice a month, our teachers discuss scholarly writings selected by our scholars. In addition, our teachers will use monthly meetings to create lessons utilizing information from the scholarly seminars and resources provided by the district history coach.


During the summer, our TAH teachers will participate in a five-day summer institute at the Huntington Library


TAH teachers will integrate technology into their curriculum, connect information to the students’ prior knowledge and use primary sources, backward mapping, and differentiated instruction in history.
