On September 30, 2014, Rio Vista Elementary School was officially recognized by Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, as a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students either achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. The award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. For 2014, 337 schools are being recognized; 287 public schools and 50 private schools with 24 from California.
Rio Vista Elementary is being recognized for the following category of achievement: Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools. As a result, they are identified among the State of California's highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school's subgroups and all students over the past five years. Student subgroup performances for each subgroup are at high levels.
Congratulations and highest commendation goes to the entire Rio Vista school community - leadership, teachers, staff, students, and parents. With vision, commitment, and perseverance, Mr. Cochran and the Rio Vista school team set high goals and expectations, never gave up, and achieved.
