At approximately 9:30 a.m. on November 7, 2018, the Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Station placed Rivera Elementary School, Rivera Middle School, and the STEAM Academy@Burke on lockdown due to a train derailment. As a precaution, Rivera Elementary School, Rivera Middle School, and the STEAM Academy@Burke were placed on shelter in place and the District’s Emergency Operation Center was initiated. Birney and Magee were later added as a precaution. Students’ families were notified that controlled release procedures would be followed and that students would be released to an adult listed on the emergency contact list. Parents were also notified that the afternoon preschool programs at Rivera Elementary, Birney and Magee were canceled and that the after school programs would continue as scheduled. At approximately 12:24 p.m, the District was notified by the Sheriff’s Department that students could be released and that there was no longer a concern. Dismissal procedures have returned to normal. The District’s Emergency Operations Center was successful maintaining ongoing communication during this incident through voice communication, the website, and social media.
