Burke Middle School Principal is Region's Best in His Class

Burke Middle School Principal, Elias Vargas was recently selected by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) as Middle School Principal of the Year for Region XV. ACSA Region XV is comprised of 56 districts and 23 charters throughout Los Angeles County and for the first time ever, El Rancho's very own was selected as the recipient of this award. Elias Vargas was first nominated by different administrators from the Whittier area, and the final selection for this award was made by a panel of administrators from all over Los Angeles County. Mr. Vargas will be recognized and receive this award at the region's awards banquet in Burbank at the end of April. In addition, Mr. Vargas’ name moves forward as a Nominee for the State of California Administrator of the Year Award. This is an outstanding honor and recognition for the school and the district.

Presentations to the Board of Education

The Board of Education received an update on the El Rancho High School pool / locker room project at its February 18, 2014 meeting. Gary Christofi, Christofi Architects and David Medcalf, Erickson Hall Construction provided a status report on the project.

Also that evening, an update on the District's Facilities Master Plan process was shared with the Board of Education and the El Rancho community by Jaime Ortiz, High Performance Learning Environments.

Availability of New Smarter Balanced Field Test Videos for Students

The California Department of Education has made available two new videos that are designed to provide information to high school and middle school students about the Smarter Balanced Field Test. The videos provide an introduction to the test and include answers to questions about what, where, how, and why and most importantly, the significant contribution students will make in helping to creat the operational tests for 2014-15.

2014 California State University Los Angeles First Chair Honor Band

Five El Rancho High School music students have been accepted to participate in the 2014 California State University Los Angeles First Chair Honor Band.

The honor band brings togethe outstanding musicians from high schools throughout Southern California. Participants will have the opportunity to gather for an incredible weekend of music making: they will rehearse with other outstanding musicians, receive instruction from Cal State Los Angeles applied faculty and perform a final concert. In addition, participants will get to enjoy the Cal State Los Angeles Showcase Concert featuring the CSULA Wind Ensemble, along with othe performing groups.

The talented El Rancho music students are Karla Bouche, Veronica Aguilar, Stefanie Magan, Andrea Moran and Carmen Ramos.

The El Rancho High School boys varsity cross country team has captured the Del Rio League championship and senior, Gefry Sarco was named cross country runner of the year by the Whittier Daily News. Congratulations on an outstanding season!

ERUSD Seeks Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee Applicants for Measure "EE"

Voters in the El Rancho Unified School District approved Measure "EE" on Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Measure "EE", a $52 million bond measure, was put on the ballot to construct and improve local schools and student support facilities, improve student access to computers and classroom technology, build vocational technical classrooms, provide improvements to better maintain schools, and provide renewable energy improvements to reduce operating costs and put more money into the classroom.

The District is currently in the process of recruiting one individual to fill a vacancy on the Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee for Measure "EE". The committee has been established to monitor all bond measure projects and expenditures, provide proper oversight, controls, and accountability to ensure that bond measure funds are used as they were intended, and make regular reports to the community on the progress of the bond measure projects.

Current Vacancies:
1) Member active in a business organization representing the business community located within the El Rancho Unified School District.
2) Member representing a parent or guardian of a child enrolled in the El Rancho Unified School District.

Completed applications must be returned no later than Friday, December 6, 2013 to the Office of the Superintendent, 9333 Loch Lomond Drive, Pico Rivera.
