On Tuesday, December 6, 2016, the El Rancho Unified Governing Board approved 3-1 the passage of a resolution changing their election process to comply with the new law aimed at increasing voter participation. The El Rancho Unified School District currently conducts its Governing Board elections during off-cycle (odd-numbered) election years. Because there is historical evidence of low voter turnout in Pico Rivera for Governing Board elections, the District recommended the resolution as the first step in the process of adopting a plan to consolidate its elections with the statewide general election. Such a plan required the Board to adopt a Resolution detailing a consolidation request to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
If the change in election date is approved by the County Board of Supervisors, the November 2017 District election date will be moved to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2018, with the terms of the El Rancho Unified Governing Board members which would have expired in December 2017 being extended to December 2018 and the terms of governing board members which would have expired in December 2019 being extended to December 2020 [Elec. Code § 10404.5(g)].
Upon approval of our District’s request, we will be sure to provide the community with communication of the new electoral timelines. If you have any questions, please contact the Superintendent’s Office at (562) 801-5199.
